A Friendly Writing Tip

September 4, 2011

Just say no to Verbosity!

Write what you need to say without a lot of excess words or distracting “purple prose”…

Imagine listening to someone telling a LENGTHY story and they just keep going on and on and on – you may have started out eager to hear the end of the story, but you quickly lose interest and just want to move on.

Read what you’ve written aloud – does it make sense? Are there words you really don’t need to make the meaning clear (try reading the sentences without the excess words)?

Are your descriptions enough or are they too detailed? Unless it is important to the story, it may not be necessary to describe the wallpaper’s intricate floral design in detail. Putting too much emphasis on descriptions of everyone in a crowded scene will only confuse your readers as to who are the key players in your story.

Go on a word diet – use only enough words to produce a tasty dish.
